History

On May 18, 1956, the Faculty of Decorative Arts was established by  ​​Professor Silpa Bhirasri, and began teaching in the Decorative Arts program in that academic year. Phraya Anuman Rajadhon (Sathien Koses) coined the Thai name “Faculty of Decorative Arts”. However, in 1974, it was revised to be correct according to the written language as “Faculty of Decorative Arts” and Professor Silpa Bhirasri created a 4-year Decorative Arts program (3-year Associate Degree, 4-year Bachelor’s Degree). Professor Silpa Bhirasri acted as the dean and Luang Wichian Phetyakhom (Director-General of the Fine Arts Department at that time) acted as the director of Silpakorn University (equivalent to the university president).

During 1956 – 1973, the Faculty of Decorative Arts provided only one program of study, which was Decorative Arts. However, at that time The Faculty of Decorative Arts is named after the name of the faculty. It is divided into 2 levels: Associate Degree, a 3-year program, and Bachelor’s Degree, a 4-year program. Graduates will receive an Associate Degree in Decorative Arts or a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Decorative Arts), respectively.

Between 1956 and 1973, the faculty improved and developed the curriculum structure to provide education only at the bachelor’s level, without an associate degree level, and expanded the number of programs.

Currently, the Faculty of Decorative Arts offers 7 Bachelor’s degree programs: Interior Design, Visual Communication Design, Product Design, Applied Arts Education, Ceramics, Jewelry Design, and Fashion Design. To promote higher education, the Faculty offers 6 Master’s degree programs: Design, Design Art, Design, Design Art (International), Product Design, Jewelry Design, and Visual Communication Design. There are 3 Doctoral degrees: Design, Design Art  (International), and Culture-based Design Art.
