  • This program is specifically designed to train researchers, designers, and scholars in conducting high-quality research in the fields of art and design. The course contents for the Ph.D. program integrate required courses, fieldwork research, and thesis. The course is logically structured, sequenced, and integrated throughout the program arranged as modules from basic to advanced courses. The required courses start 1st year; 370 601 Advanced Research in Design Art, 370 602 Seminar in Design Arts and finish in semester 1 of the second year with 370 603 Topics in Design Arts.  The program research component is aligned to the expected learning outcome.
  • Principle of research methodology, ethic, workshop in advanced design arts research, enhancement experience and knowledge of aesthetic both art history and contemporary, research execution from exchanges of ideas, special design topics, data collection and article writing preparation, taught to all students in the 1st year and semester 1 of the second year along with additional research in design arts methods workshops, exploring Thai cultural and local craft on field trip as well as national collaborative workshops and international conference on design. They allow students from different backgrounds to adjust and adapt themselves to teaching and learning styles of our international program. Seminar in Design Arts and international academic field trip are required courses taught in the semester 1 of the 2nd year. In fieldwork research, students have the opportunity to practice lessons learned from their core courses in designing and conducting individual research with inputs from stakeholders as well as problem solving skills in real situations.
  • Students have to pass all 6 credits required courses in 1st year before starting their thesis in 2nd year. Qualifying examination, usually taken in the semester 1 of the 1st year doctoral program, is an assessment method to ensure that the doctoral students have achieved or gained ability to analyze research data, appropriately interpret the analytical outputs, and discuss the findings amidst the evolving state of knowledge. The thesis demonstrates the capability of the student in conducting well-planned research of international standard. A doctoral thesis is the beginning of professionalization for a design art research career. The proposal is prepared and refined in parallel with the progress of the coursework through group discussion before submission for approval by the Committee for Graduate Study of the University by the end of the first year. Data collection is undertaken for a period of 12-18 months approximately in the student’s regular place of work. Final analysis and preparation of the thesis will occupy the final 12-24 months in Silpakorn University to ensure quality of work and success. Each required course in the program provides specific skills, self-directed learning, practice-based learning, practical work, moral, teamwork, communication, life-long learning and career skills through group work, field work, oral presentation and discussion, which are encompassed in all courses of the program.
